This week, I visited another traveler, kind-hearted Tora san, the hero of the longest movie series in history, Otoko wa Tsurai yo! (It’s tough to be a man!): 48 “cult” episodes produced between 1969 and 1995, 45 of them directed by Yoji Yamada. The main character, played by Kiyoshi Atsumi travels through a different region of Japan each time, before returning home in Shibamata, a town located in Katsushika, in Eastern Tokyo.
A small but nice museum introduces the various scenaries of the movies, typical of a “shitamachi” (popular town), like this sake shop. Nearby is Yamamoto Tei, a beautiful house and garden, and Taishakuten, a pilgrimage destination associated with the lotus sutra.
